Writing A Good Research Paper In 8 Simple Steps

Writing a good research paper isn’t always easy, but it is possible! So, spend some time reading this handy guide to writing a great research paper in eight easy steps.

  1. Familiarise yourself with the formatting style
  2. Before you start writing your research paper, it’s important that you know which formatting style you’re expected to use. There are quite a few formatting styles, such as APA or MLA. Find out from your lecturer which style you should use, and go learn a bit about it.

  3. Find some decent examples
  4. Once you know what formatting style to use, you can find a few good quality examples of research papers in that style. Learning from examples is one of the easiest ways to learn, so don’t skip this step!

  5. Choose your topic wisely
  6. The topic of your essay is obviously of vital importance. It’s critical that you choose a subject that is important to you and interests you, as it’s very difficult to write a good essay about a topic you really hate. If you’re forced to write about a specific subject that you detest, try to at least find an angle that interests you a little bit.

  7. Do some effective research
  8. When you’ve chosen a topic to write about, you can investigate the subject matter. Make sure you do a good job, as the rest of your paper will rely on the quality of the research you do now.

  9. Write a proper outline
  10. After you’ve thoroughly investigated the topic, you can write a proper outline for your essay. Try to use this as an opportunity to organise your ideas and information in a way that makes sense.

  11. Write your paper
  12. Now it’s finally time to write! Sit yourself down in a quiet spot and start fleshing out your outline. Don’t worry if you deviate from it a little, it’s really there as a guideline, not a rule set in stone.

  13. Edit your work
  14. Once you’ve written your first draft, you can go ahead and edit your research paper. Change anything that doesn’t make sense and remove any information that doesn’t belong in your essay.

  15. Proofread your work
  16. Now it’s time to proofread your work, so read it aloud so that you can hear any mistakes or grammatical problems. You can also ask someone else to proofread you essay for you, just to make sure there are no errors when you submit it.
